How shipping and tracking works in Print Trail

A single order can sometimes be split into multiple fulfilments, though it’s common to have only one fulfilment per order.

Each fulfilment in an order ships from a separate location. Each fulfilment therefore has its own shipping details (shipping method, status, tracking details).

Choosing shipping

How you specify shipping methods varies slightly depending on how the order was created (i.e. the order’s source).

  • When you create a manual order via in the Print Trail app, you will be presented with a list of shipping methods to choose from.

  • For orders created via the Print Trail API, a list of available shipping methods for each fulfilment is provided with the create order response. One of these must be chosen for each fulfilment in the order.

  • When importing orders via file upload, one of Print Trail’s broad shipping types must be used (Print Trail automatically converts your choice into the best value appropriate shipping method for that order):

    • Standard – the lowest cost option, usually slower and sometimes without tracking.
    • Express – usually quicker, with tracking, and typically a higher cost.

Editing shipping methods

Shipping is chosen on the order detail page. Each fulfilment in an order has its own shipping method.

If available shipping methods are displayed on a fulfilment, simply click your preferred shipping choice to select it.

Getting shipping updates

The shipping method and date of shipping will be shown on the order details page, in the relevant fulfilment card.

Once a fulfilment is dispatched, an email is sent to the customer with tracking details.

Tracking details

‘Tracking’ allows you to track the progress of shipments. Tracking details usually include a tracking number, the method used, and a tracking link (URL) where you can see updates on the progress of a shipment.

Tracked shipping methods can provide peace of mind to customers, and can sometimes allow customers to rearrange deliveries (not all couriers support this).

Not all shipping methods include tracking.

👉 ‘Tracked’ shipping is recommended as it generally cuts down on the number of delivery issues, reducing your customer support requirements.

Finding tracking details

When a fulfilment is dispatched via a tracked shipping method, tracking details will be available shortly afterwards, on the fulfilment.

To find tracking details:

  1. Search for the order number at: Orders.
  2. Go to the order’s detail page, and scroll down to find the correct fulfilment.
  3. In the relevant fulfilment, the tracking link and details will be shown (as long as a tracked method was chosen for this order, and the fulfilment has been dispatched).
