Pre-order products
'Pre-order' is an optional state on a product which allows you to sell a product before you are ready to have it shipped.
For example, many e-commerce software platforms allow you to sell pre-orders, or you could run a Kickstarter-style campaign on your e-commerce site.
What happens when an order is created for a pre-order product
Products in the pre-order state can be ordered but orders will be paused (in the holding state) until either:
- The product becomes in stock at an inventory location, or
- Print-on-demand is enabled for the product, along with approved print-on-demand settings.
How to set a product as pre-order
Set a product’s status to ‘Pre-order’ on the product’s details page, using the drop-down top right.
👉 Tip: Make sure your customers know that orders for a pre-order product will be shipped at a later date.
